River Mur wins the European Riverprize
The International RiverFoundation has awarded the 2014 European Riverprize to Austria’s River Mur.

The River Mur had been severely regulated beginning in the late 19th century. The Styrian Government, in cooperation with Freiland Environmental Consulting Civil Engineers has in recent decades been working intensively to restore priority stretches (about 22km) of the River Mur. The main aim was to re-establish the natural conditions of the river. The works included restore natural habitats for many species that rely on the river and surrounding environment.

Mr Bart Fokkens, Chair of the European Riverprize judging panel, said that the Mur River restoration was very well planned and implemented with intensive public participation, stakeholder engagement and transboundary cooperation from the very beginning.

Find more information about the Winner of the European Riverprize on the websites of the International RiverFoundation (IRF) and the International Commission on the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR).

May 2014 flood events and their consequences for the WSS sector

May 2014, Danube region

In May 2014, the Danube Region experienced one of the most damaging flood events ever recorded. An unusual low-pressure weather system produced extensive rainfall over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia in a very short time resulting in the highest levels of precipitation in over 120 years of recorded measurements. Over 60 people were killed by the events and hundreds of thousands of people were forced from their homes. The rains also activated torrents and mudslides, and several rivers in watersheds of the Sava and Morava River systems rose, flooded surrounding valleys and covered extensive areas of land with floodwaters. Among the consequences of the floods was a major disruption and potential long-term damage of water services (water supply and wastewater treatment) in some communities.

The following presentations provide information about what happened in the 2014 floods and then evaluate what the lessons for water services and water utilities are.

Vladimir Taušanović (Belgrade Waterworks & Sewerage / IAWD): Danube floods 2014 -
       Consequences for Water Utilities

Jelena Janevska (NALAS): NALAS activities in support to flooded areas

Joaquin Toro (World Bank): Impact of Disasters in WASH

Oliver Schmoll (WHO): The WHO water safety plan approach:
